The Department of Japanese Language and Literature was founded in 1997, and its predecessor is the Major of Japanese Language and Literature, which was founded in 1972. Its first dean is Professor Wang Jianyi, and the first deputy dean is the associate professor Wang Zhiying. Each year, the department enrolls 40 undergraduates, in addition to international students and auditors; 6 master candidates in three directions: Japanese language, literature, and culture, in addition to on-the-job postgraduates.Now, there are 17 full-time teachers, including 5 professors and 5 associate professors; 12 of the teachers have doctoral degrees.

Its predecessor, the major of Japanese language and literature, was founded in 1972 and began to enroll students nationwide for four-year schooling in 1978. The Postgraduate Section, established in 1978, was authorized by the Commission of Education to grant master’s degrees in 1986.

Its goal of undergraduate education is to help students lay a solid foundation, broaden their horizon, and cultivate excellent capabilities. With intensive reading and speaking as the major threads, its courses also include Japanese listening and speaking, extensive reading, a survey of Japan, Japanese literature appreciation, Japanese literature history, classical Japanese grammar, Japanese culture, Japanese history, translation, writing, and newspaper reading, etc.

The research directions of its master programs include Japanese linguistics, Japanese literature and Japanese culture. The goal for their education is to develop their research and teaching capabilities. Apart from four compulsory courses (namely Introduction to Japanese Linguistics, Introduction to Japanese Literature, Introduction to Japanese Culture, Selected Readings in Classical Japanese Literature), the department also offers over 20 optional courses to the students, who must take 12 credits for compulsory courses and 15 credits for optional courses before applying to work on their master’s theses.
