Translation

The Department of Translation and Interpretation was founded in November 2002 to meet the demand for competent translators and interpreters. The department adheres to cultivating inter-disciplinary translators and interpreters, who master not only translation and interpretation knowledge and skills, but also knowledge in an applied discipline. Through years of systematic education, the graduates, with their proficient oral English and systematic knowledge, shall be competent for translation and interpretation in a certain profession. The department will adopt the teaching mode that puts emphasis on both translation and interpretation skills and knowledge in applied disciplines.

Now, three directions are available for junior and senior students to choose from: foreign trade translation and interpretation, international politics and cultural communication, technological translation and interpretation.

The kernel courses fall into three categories: English Skills, English Knowledge, and Applied Disciplines. The courses include English listening and speaking, consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, appreciation of famous interpretations, appreciation of famous translations, English writing, public speech; English culture, British and American literature, Chinese culture; western economics, international economics, international finance, international economic laws, international politics, college physics, and college chemistry. Besides English, Applied Disciplines students are also expected to take core courses of some other departments, and those who meet relevant requirements may receive bachelor’s degrees both in English and in the relevant major.

Most backbone teachers in this department have inter-disciplinary education experience. They have degrees not only in English, but also in law, business administration, etc. They have rich work experience in translation and interpretation in Chinese embassies or agency institutions abroad.

The graduates of this department are employed mainly in cross-national corporations, international organizations, foreign trade management departments in the government, administration departments for international exchanges, foreign trade departments of large-scale companies, colleges and universities, and research institutions.
