Nankai University Successfully Holds the 2022 Student Development Forum of Modern Academy

On July 16, the Student Development Forum of Modern Academy hosted by the dean’s office and Mudan Academy of Nankai University was successfully held online. The theme of this forum is “Sharing Wisdom and Creating the Future: University’s Academy Education for Students’ Growth”. Representatives of students from different universities, such as the University of Macau, Fudan University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Ocean University of China, Qingdao University, Shantou University, Hunan Normal University, Shanxi Normal University, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Bohai University, Jinzhong College of Information gathered online, discussed academy education. More than 450 teachers and students listened to the report online and participated in the communication.

This forum includes 8 thematic reports and 4 sub-forum discussions. The forum was presided over by Xiang Yu, tutor of Mudan Academy, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and vice president of the College of Foreign Languages. Li Chuanyong, director of the academic affairs office of Nankai University, and Yan Guodong, Dean of Mudan Academy and of the College, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Prof. Yan Guodong said that relying on the characteristics of the college, Mudan Academy has built a “teacher-student development community” that focuses on learning and combines teaching and learning. It promotes interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary integration, and is committed to cultivating students into builders and successors of socialism in the New Era with excellent professional knowledge, profound humanistic quality, international vision, Chinese passions and Nankai character. He said that since Nankai University and other universities implemented the academy education mode, we have achieved obvious results and explored useful experiences, and the main force of students in academy construction is also constantly improving. It is expected that the exchanges between academy students in different universities can collide with the sparks of wisdom and contribute to the construction and development of the academy.

Director Li Chuanyong introduced that our university is committed to building a “teacher-student community” from multiple dimensions and levels, and exploring the practice of educating people in the “smart academy”. The connotation of the teacher-student community in the New Era is to realize the common growth of teachers and students. Through such initiatives as academic guidance, smart academy, classroom reform, smart teaching and service learning, a dual cycle of teacher-student communication has been formed in and outside the classroom and the campus, online and offline. Among them, the smart academy focuses on exploring the dual academy education mode of “professional-smart academy”, providing a characteristic interdisciplinary education environment for the whole university, and strengthening teachers’ teaching skill, so as to promote the connotative development of higher education.

In the theme report session, the student representatives shared their experiences and insights on the construction of different types of academies, such as freshman academies, full-time academies, elite academies, and wisdom academies. Wang Tianze from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics introduced the freshman adaptation education under the academy system; Gao Junjie, a student from Ocean University of China, shared the experience of the freshman academy education mode; Lin Yitong from the University of Macau described the experience of the academy’s six-year service; Li Tianqin, a student from Fudan University, introduced the second class of full-time academy education and the construction of cultural community; Tian Jingli, a student from Southern Medical University, shared the practice and results of relying on the academy to carry out health science popularization and promote the cultivation of compound talents; Zhu Haoning from Qian Xuesen College of Xi’an Jiaotong University emphatically introduced the talent training mode; Long Linhai from Fushan Academy of Qingdao University introduced the education system of “Bo, Ya, Hui, and Xing” (wide horizon, elegant manner, intelligence, and practices); Qiu Chenxiao from Mudan Academy of Nankai University introduced the “i +” training system. The experience and understanding of the academy introduced by the student representatives in combination with their own experience and feelings triggered warm interaction among the audience.

At the sub-forum discussion, Yuan Shiqi, from Fushan Academy of Qingdao University, Guo Ding, from Xingyuan Academy of Ocean University of China, and Gao Yusong, from Philosophy Academy of Shanxi Normal University actively discussed how to seek the way of “general education” in academies; Kuang Siyuan from Cai Jiyou Academy of Macau University, Chen Sizhu from Defeng Academy of Southern Medical University, and Ding Lanruo from Shicheng Academy of Hunan Normal University talked about the construction and expansion of the “second classroom” under the academy system; Zhang Haoyan from Mudan Academy of Nankai University, Yang Xuan from Fushan Academy of Qingdao University, Wang Yuan from Baili Academy of Bohai University, and Chai Yuying from Taihang Academy discussed how to further optimize the construction of the academy’s teacher-student community; Wu Lanxin from Xingyuan Academy of Ocean University of China, Feng Yu from Hongyi College of Shantou University and Zhao Yinan from Sun Yat-sen University shared their thoughts on the self-management and service of academy students. At the sub forum, the students talked with confidence and actively offered suggestions for the development of the academy.

At the end of forum, Prof. Li Min, tutor of Mudan Academy of Nankai University and Vice Dean of College of Foreign Languages, delivered a closing speech. Prof. Li Min emphasized three points. First, the academy system is an exploratory system, which needs to be explored and improved by all. Second, although the Academy was born in the predicament of higher education, its future must be bright just as the impact of informatization on teaching. Third, the exploration of academies is not only the responsibility of colleges and universities and teachers, but also a process of joint exploration by universities, teachers and students. The final foothold of the construction of academies must be the students and their development. From this point of view, students are not only the assisting force, but also the fresh troops of the academy construction.

It is reported that this forum was planned and organized by the students of Mudan Academy of Nankai University. It aims to simulate the subjective initiative of students in academy construction, build an exchange platform among students across the country, and listen to the voices of academy students. After early registration and selection, the student representatives who spoke at the forum were selected from more than 100 universities. The wonderful reports and profound thinking of the student representatives have left valuable enlightenment for the development of modern academies and universities. In the future, Mudan Academy of Nankai University will continue to strengthen communications with different academies and universities, constantly improve the construction of the Academy, and contribute to the talents training of Nankai University.
