Recently, “the appointment with tutors -- afternoon tea for postgraduate teachers and students communication” organized by the Graduate Work Department of the Party Committee and undertaken by the Academic Department of the Graduate Association of the College of Foreign Languages was successfully held in the 139 meeting room of Building 7. This event invited professor Zhang Zhizhong, director of Translation Department of the College of Foreign Languages and vice-chairman of the Chinese-English-Chinese Comparative Study Committee of the Classics-English Translation Professional Committee, to give a special lecture entitled “The Effective Way for Chinese Ancient Poems to Enter the English-Speaking World”.

In the lecture, Zhang Zhizhong firstly cited Mr. Xu Yuanchong’s Three Hundred Tang Poems in English Translation and emphasized that everyone should pay attention to the effectiveness of translation and external communication. Later, Zhang Zhizhong focused on the plight of Chinese translators in translating ancient poems. Although Chinese translators worked hard, their translations did not achieve corresponding success in the West. To achieve breakthrough progress, they must change their concepts and introduce the deconstruction view of translation. Next, Zhang Zhizhong took the different English translations and back-translation versions of “Jing Ye Si” as examples to explain the deconstructionist view of translation in detail. He mentioned the meaning and methods of the deconstructivist view of translation for the English translation of ancient poems and suggested that translators should increase their life experience and read more English books to improve their translation level.

At the end of the lecture, Zhang Zhizhong called on Chinese translators to learn from the strengths of Western translators and combine their advantages to make breakthroughs in the translation of ancient poems into English and make a real contribution to Chinese culture going global. The students who participated in the meeting expressed that they have benefited a lot. The whole academic meeting came to an end with warm applause.
