On October 19th, the 2019 Chinese English Teaching Seminar was held at Huazhong Normal University, and the results of the annual excellent papers were announced. Sun Lina, Associate Professor from the Department of English of the NKU, under the topic of Words and Actions: An EFL Teacher's Critical Literacy Goals and Their Enactment in a Reading Class in China won the Outstanding Paper Award of the 2019 Chinese English Teaching Seminar. The paper will be published in the magizine of Chinese Applied Linguistics (English)--a Branch journal of Chinese English Teaching Seminar. The journal is the only core journal concerning with English education and applied linguistics in China that is published overseas in English.
From the perspective of Krashen's second language acquisition and Freire's critical reading, she used the qualitative research methods such as classroom observation, field interview and text analysis to deeply analyze how to effectively integrate graphic novels as historical narratives into foreign language teaching. This research is beneficial to, apart from improving students' language skills, further develop their critical thinking ability, expand multiple perspectives, improve cultural consciousness, and realize the transition to the empowerment teaching mode.
Sponsered by the Branch of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese(CACSC) ( Seminar of Research on English Teaching ), organized by the College of Foreign Languages of Huazhong Normal University and co-organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the seminar welcomed nearly 400 English education experts and scholars from all over the country attended the conference. The seminar received altogether 90 papers, of which 3 excellent papers were selected. Prof. Zhang Wenzhong from the Department of English, as a standing director of CACSC and a member of the Academic Steering Committee of the annual meeting, participated in the seminar. He organized the seminar on the theme of “The Right Empower Approach to English Teaching and Research” and hosted the “Research on Basic English Education”. With the hand-showing vote of the Standing Committee, the college of Foreign Languages of Nankai University won the bid to host the 2022 annual meeting. Appointed as the coordinator of the Academic Steering Committee, Zhang Wenzhong should work on the Academic Committee of the Annual Meeting and the establishment of the Academic Research Groups (the Sub-Committee).
