Pro. Gu Hengdong of Our College Was Awarded Translator of 2018 National Chen Ziang National Poetry Prize

On march 3rd, China’s International Poetry Week & Cheng Ziang National Poetry Prize sponsored by Poetry Periodics were held in Suining exhibition hall in Sichuan. About 200 poets, theoreticians and translators both at home and abroad attended this ceremony. Some writers and chief leaders of literary associations also attended it, for example, Gao Hongbo, vice chairman of China Writers Association and director of Children Literature Committee, Hao Shaowen, educator of Spanish Embassy, Li Shaojun, chief editor of Poetry Periodics, Bai Tao, vice chairman of Inner Mongolia Writers Association, Li Bing, vice chairman and deputy secretary of the Art and Literary Federation of Sichuan, Liang Ping, vice chairman of Sichuan Writers Association, Gong Xuemin, chief editor of Poetry Periodics and vice chairman Sichuan Writers Association.

Gu Hengdong whose pen name is Gu Yu, a professor of our Russian Language Department as well we a talented translator, has been awarded “Translator of 2018 National Chen Ziang National Poetry Prize”. The award speech goes: Mr. Gu has dedicated himself to translating numerous Russian poems into China. In the past years, he has made great achievements in working together with Russian sinologists and poets in translating Chinese poems into Russia. In addition, he has translated numbers of selected poems of many brilliant Russian poets like Pushikin, Bunin, Balmont and Tsvetaeva. He has also presided over the translation of Russian Silver Age Literature History and some other tomes. In terms of the theory of poetry translation, he has attached great importance to the forms of poems to translate them in much more precise manners. In his published translation work Selected Poems of Gorbowski, the musical rhythm of those poems composed of by an accomplished singing poet has been completely taped while the form of an organized and powerful modern poem is well preserved.

Prof. Gu has translated such many children literature works as Complete Works of Krylov’s Fables, Pushkin’s Fairytales, Ushinski’s Fairytales, Selected Poems of Gamzatov and so on. He was awarded the Pushikin Memorial Medal by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in 1999. Moreover, he was once appointed as the vice president of Pushikin Studies Association, member of Russian Literature Studies Association and deputy secretary of Tianjin Translators Association.
