Professor Murad Abbas, Head of the Arabic Department of the University of Alexandria, Egypt, Visited the College of Foreign Languages

Recently, Murad Abbas, Professor and Doctoral Tutor of the Arabic Department of the Faculty of Arts of University of Alexandria in Egypt, and a member of the Jury of the National Academic Council of Egypt, visited the College of Foreign Languages, and made in-depth exchanges on the construction of the Arabic major, the proposal of being a visiting professor at Nankai University and mutual visits between teachers and students.

On the morning of October 30th, Zou Yujie, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Foreign Languages, Yan Guodong, Dean of the college, Wang Kai and Jiao Yanting, Vice Deans of the college and Dou Tianjiao and Fu Jingjiao, Arabic professional teachers, attended the meeting.

Yan Guodong briefly introduced to Murad on the history, the discipline construction, the development planning, the teachers' development, the talent introduction and the preparation of the Arabic major of Nankai University and the College of Foreign Languages. He expressed warm welcome to Murad's visit. Yan Guodong said that Alexandria University and Nankai University were both famous universities with a long history of cultural disciplines. The “Belt and Road” initiative had brought together two ancient civilizations- China and Egypt- and exchanges were more urgent. The two sides would start cooperation in academic exchanges, mutual visits of teachers, and professional construction.

Murad said that Nankai University was a famous university with a long history and overseas reputation. He felt the strong academic atmosphere of Nankai University, and also saw the positive learning attitude of Nankai students. The University of Alexandria was about to open a Chinese major and hoped to cooperate with Nankai University to cultivate advanced compound talents for two countries who were proficient in Arabic and Chinese. He would help the College of Foreign Languages to do professional construction and subject development. He believed that with the support of the university and the college, the Arabic major would definitely become a high-level international major.

On October 31, Murad held talks with Yan Guodong, Wang Kai and Li Dongyuan from the Teaching and Research Office of the college. Wang Kai introduced the curriculum, syllabus planning, and teacher status ofthe Arabic major as well as basic situation of its preparation. He briefly explained the development goals and the student development plan of the Arabic major and invited Murad to give some strategic suggestions on curriculum setting, classroom efficiency improvement, and teaching methods improvement for teaching students who are not native and had no knowledge in Arabic. The two sides reached an agreement on improving curriculum, promoting the internationalization of teaching methods, optimizing talent training programs, introducing foreign classrooms and teachers, and improving teachers' teaching and research standard. At the same time, the two sides had formed cooperation intentions in promoting teacher cooperation, expanding student communication channels, achieving international curriculum construction and actively introducing foreign talents.

On November 1st, Prof. Murad Abbas gave a lecture entitled “A Brief Introduction to the History of Arabic Literature” for undergraduate, postgraduates and doctoral students in English.

Murad talked about the evolution of Arabic and the formation of the standard language as well as the different tribal dialects and their respective characteristics during the Jahiliye period. On this basis, he also introduced the literature in Jahiliye period, the four caliphs period, the Umayyad period, Abbas period, and Andalusian literature and the modern literature of Arab influenced by European literature.

The whole lecture was rich and vivid, and the explanation was easy to understand. In the questioning session, Murad gave detailed answers to questions such as "The relationship between Persian and Arabic", "the relations between Iranian culture and Arab cultural", and "Arab modern literary form". The students who participated in the lecture said that the lecture broadened their horizons and made everyone have more understanding of the Arabic culture and literature. At the same time, they also learnt much from the rigorous academic attitude, the extensive knowledge and the analytical perspectives of the professor.

It is reported that the University of Alexandria in Egypt is a famous institution of higher education with a long history and grand cultural achievements. Well-known in the Arab countries, it is also a famous modern comprehensive university which has provided a large number of professors and cultivated numerous talents for Arabic countries such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait, Libya, Algeria and for European countries such as Spain, France and Britain. The University of Alexandria has also established cooperative relationships with some domestic universities such as Sun Yat-Sen University and Ningxia University which has opened the Arabic major. The Arabic Department of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Alexandria is also one of the oldest subjects of Alexandria University. Professor Murad Abbas is currently the head and a doctoral tutor of the Arabic Department of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alexandria in Egypt, and a member of the highest academic committee of Egypt, Iraq and Kuwait.
