Youth Teacher of Our School Participated in the Seminar of the Italian Election of the European Academy of Social Sciences

Association for Italy Study of Chinese Association for European Studies held a seminar on “Italian Political Situation and Its Influence after the Election”, and discussed the political situation in Italy, the economic situation, the impact on Europe, and the trend of Sino-Italian relations after the election. The youth Italian teacher Shi Dou of the College of Foreign Languages participated and made a keynote speech on the seminar.

The Italian parliamentary election was held on March 4, 2018. The results of the election showed that the votes cast by the Anti-establishment Party and extremist political parties had exceeded the traditional middle-left/middle-right parties, and the possibility of their coming to power greatly increased. In order to promote relevant discussions in the domestic academic community, the Chinese Association for European Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences held a seminar. Luo Hongbo, president of the Association for Italy Study and a researcher at Chinese Association for European Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, presided the seminar, and more than 40 people from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Nankai University, Tongji University, Xi’an International Studies University, Culture Department of Italian Embassy in China, press and business community attended the event.

In his speech, Shi Dou pointed out that the Populist Party represented by the Five-Star Movement and the Coalition Party won more than 50% of votes, marking the political situation in Italy or entering a new era of populist government. The result of this election was caused by the failure of the Renzi government to reverse the downturn in Italy’s economy and employment, causing dissatisfaction among the voters, and voting for the five-star movement and the coalition party; on the other hand, the five-star movement and Coalition Party won a lot of support for its strategy of changing votes for benefits such as “unconditional minimum income” and “single tax” After the election, Di Mayo’s Five-Star Movement showed a moderate attitude of pro-Europeanism, openness, and cooperation; the Coalition Party under leadership of Salvini maintained a strong nationalism and skeptical stance toward immigration. Strong; while the Democratic Party expressed its willingness to be an opposition party with an uncooperative attitude. Due to the huge differences in political appeals of major political parties, the government establishment will be difficult. As Populist Parties has occupied half of the parliament, they will inevitably increase the friction between Italy and the EU, and will also have an unpredictable impact on the Sino-Italian relations.

Luo Hongbo, a researcher at Chinese Association for European Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and associate researcher Sun Yanhong analyzed the influence of the Italian election results from the perspective of the evolution of the Italian political landscape and the relationship between Italy and the European Union. Dr. Yu Xuefeng, an Italian teacher at Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Dr. Li Kaixuan from Marxist Institution of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences took Italian foreign policy and labor market reform as an entry point, and conducted a thorough analysis of the results of the election. Participants made speeches enthusiastically and had in-depth discussions on a variety of topics. Many of the contents were very important for the content of Italian teaching in universities.
