On Oct.28-29, the 10th National German Debating Competition for college students was held in Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Languages. Through fierce competition, two undergraduates from NKU, Yuemeng Li and Yumeng Liu, stood out and won the Championship. They will head for Germany to attend the one-month language training program offered by Goeyhe Institute.
48 German major delegations from different universities in China attended the two-days competition. Two delegations, Nankai University and Sun Yat-sen University, made it to the finals after the preliminary contest, the eight-finals, and the quarterfinals. The debate topic in the semifinals was whether manual translation software will displace translator in the future. The heated debate showed the capability of debaters in the two teams. As the positive side, our debaters won the confirmation of judges and debaters from the opposite side. The success and praise they won are the result of their adequate preparation, solid language skill, excellent debating technique and outstanding performance.
The contest demonstrated the admirable education concept and high education quality of Nankai University. Following the Double Tops construction, College of Foreign Language in NKU established the goal of talent training---to specialize in foreign languages, to cultivate students' humanistic quality, to encourage students' international outlook, to excavate students' humanistic feelings and to develop the characteristics of Nankai University. This goal is also the guiding light in the enhancement and deepening of educational reform, and has gained phased educational objectives.
It is said that the National German Competition for college students was co-hosted by National Instructive Committee of German major and Goethe Institute, and funded by German academic center, FLTRP and other work units.
This competition is the national professional event which stands for the highest level of national German education for college students, and is also the most authoritative German competition. It is a grand occasion for the German circle in China. As the host of the 9th national competition, NKU accumulated rich experience for the attendance of the 10th competition.
